TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint (the jaw joint) that connects your lower jawbone to your skull. We are constantly using these joints during the day. Without them, we would not be able to speak or eat so effortlessly.
TMD (temporomandibular disorder) is the common pain and inflammation that affects these joints and can result in many excruciating physical and psychological issues. Symptoms include:

Teeth grinding is an especially problematic symptom because it can lead to further problems. Prolonged teeth grinding, or bruxism, can cause enamel to wear off teeth and expose dentin. This material is softer than enamel and more susceptible to decay. Sensitivity to hot and cold food or drink may also develop from excessive teeth grinding. Some people who wear veneers do this too.
